A few opinions on this...

I’ve had season tickets to WBB since 1999, and began regularly attending when I retired from the federal gov’t in 2003. I’ve seen teams coached by BH, BD and DW. I’ve never coached women, and I have to think it is different than coaching men.

I’ve read the posts below, and agree with most of them. I posted a link to the CT article by Mr. LaBlue opining that DW should be back next year. I was interested to hear all of your opinions, because I think your opinions carry more weight than Mr. LaBlue’s opinion, if for no other reason that most of you have a lengthier historical perspective. Based upon Mr. LaBlue’s probable length of time observing VT WBB, I would assume he only knows DW’s VT WBB since DW began his tenure.

DW is an upgrade over BD. The defense has improved a lot under DW, but that improvement occurred over the first couple of years under DW. The offensive spacing was immediately improved during DW’s first year. To be fair, these improvements after the BD era were not hard to achieve because BD’s teams were big underachievers.

IMO, DW hasn’t earned, nor does he deserve to come back for his 6th and final year, nor has he earned or deserves an extension beyond his six-year contract. IMO, DW just plain can’t coach WBB. His offensive sets are not any better than BD’s. The team can’t seem to get the ball inside on a regular basis, they don’t box out, players are played out of position, player development/improvement seems non-existent, and playing time seems dependent on favoritism vice talent or effort. I also think that if DW comes back next year, as a lame duck, the hole dug by JW, BD and DW will only get deeper.

That being said, I regretfully think that DW will be back next year. His return, IMHO, will be based on several factors. Is there anyone WB can get who is better, and can he get them to undertake the effort? Are WB and the Athletic Dept committed to women’s sports? No one cares about what we (including myself) think or want; however, what about loyalty to the players? Doesn’t this team, and the players, deserve better? Players and teams want to excel, improve, and realize success for their efforts. None of these things have been achieved in WBB under BD, DW, JW or (to date) WB. The decision to me is more about the school’s commitment to WBB and women’s sports, than it is about DW and his lackluster performance to date.
